Small changes for the big picture.

Here at Odd Plant, we are firm believers that individuals have the ability to make positive large-scale change. Something our team tries to practice is mindful consumption.

Mindful consumption is a customer-centric approach to sustainability. While large corporations ignore the ramifications of global over-consumption by continuing to mass-produce in excess, exhaust natural resources, promote misleading [greenwashing] information to sell more products, cut corners to reduce costs and maximize profits, etc; many ethical and sustainable decisions have unfortunately been shifted to consumers. We understand that it seems unfair that the general public has been left with these burdens; however, these capital driven industries will see demand as authorization to continue with their current practices. There are a few options you can get started with now to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.

  • Our Instagram (@opfoundation), is dedicated to bringing an unbiased breakdown of some complicated ideas and topics. Many of the topics that we report on require change on an industry level, but we have included fun tips and projects that you can integrate into your daily lifestyle to be proactive.

  • You’ve probably heard the statistic about how only 8% of recyclables are actually being recycled. Manufacturing new plastic products has become cheaper than recycling old plastics. We have more information on our Instagram (@opfoundation) that break these concepts down if you’d like to learn more. Long story short, use what you already own first, consider buying second-hand instead of something new, recyclable products should be considered the last resort, and say no to single-use items!

  • Having empathy for others; even for individuals that may share different ideals than yourself. Try to be open-minded. On some occasions you might realize that you’re actually working towards the same goals, but with different approaches! Most importantly, it’s difficult to create effective solutions when there’s a lack of conversation to identify the core problem(s).

  • Stay current on policies and speak your mind when it comes to local legislation.
