Introduction and Purpose

The mission of Odd Plant is to create a more informed public regarding sustainable systems and practices. This includes challenging the reader with a deeper understanding and appreciation of culture, policy, and social and environmental systems within the United States.

Odd Plant holds its reporting to the highest standards in public service and cultural expression.

Under the 1st Amendment Right of Freedom of Speech, we recognize the rights of staff members to freely engage in creative and civic activities outside of the organization. These communications may not necessarily reflect the views of Odd Plant.

Every member of Odd Plant, including independent contractors and volunteers, are expected to read this document fully and carefully. Our contracts with freelance employees and volunteers must also honor Odd Plant’s Code of Ethics.

Our Duty to Readers

We appreciate and respect every reader on our site. We are grateful for the trust you place in us. Our team at Odd Plant strives to present clear and factual information regarding the topics we cover. We will acknowledge any mistake we might make and will strive to promptly correct it and ensure it does not recur. We prioritize factuality in the information we present and will not risk inaccuracy by rushing publication.

Our Commitment to Journalism

  1. Present different perspectives while remaining nonpartisan, fair, honest, and transparent.

  2. Present the truth with accuracy.

  3. Recognize the racial, cultural, and philosophical diversity of human societies in order to reflect them faithfully.

  4. Distinguish between news material, opinion, and analysis to avoid speculation of propaganda.

Preserving Neutrality and Minimizing Harm

  1. Undue intrusiveness is not an option to obtain information and news; respect people’s privacy.

  2. Show compassion for individuals that may be directly affected by news coverage. Consider cultural differences in approach and treatment.

  3. Recognize that the legal access to information differs from the ethical justification to publish.

  4. Weigh the potential consequences of publishing including long-term ramifications.

  5. Avoid pandering.

  6. Provide updated information and complete information as appropriate.

  7. Protect all parties involved.

  8. Do not interfere with national security.

Obligations to Odd Plant

The Odd Plant name will not be used for private purposes. Any Odd Plant stationary, business cards, etc. will not be used for any other purpose besides business directly affiliated with Odd Plant.

Staff members must not disclose confidential information about operations, plans, or policies of Odd Plant or its affiliates.

We require staff members to disclose any possible conflicts of interest.

Use of Material and Copyright

Odd Plant and the original authors retain copyright of material published on any of Odd Plant’s platforms; images are free for use only for educational purposes and personal use.

Journalistic Work Outside of Odd Plant

All members of Odd Plant are allowed to engage in freelance work outside of Odd Plant as long as there is no possible conflict of interest.

Advertising, Marketing, and Promotions

We do not write articles to promote or advertise individuals or businesses.

Donations, Investments, and Financial Ties

Acceptance of financial support from donors does not imply endorsements of products, services, or opinions. Odd Plant accepts gifts, grants, and sponsorships from both individuals and organizations to support our nonprofit. The information and judgements provided on our platform are made independently and are not influenced by donor support.
