Mindful Consumption

Published March 22, 2022

There are many sustainability issues that require global systemic change. In a society driven by consumerism and excess, aggressive marketing campaigns encourage wasteful behavior to sell more products without consideration for social and environmental ramifications.

As a consumer, you have the power to CREATE change.

Over time we've become disconnected to where our products come from. A system that prioritizes excess has given many companies the green light to abuse the earth's natural resources, for the sake of mass production.

Here's the good news and the bad news: consumption drives commerce. That means that as many problems are out of our control, our desire for products matters. A small shift in shopping habits can change everything.

By increasing the number of informed consumers across the globe, we can assess and critique current ethical practices and the environmental impacts of products. As a result, there will be a growing pressure for manufacturers to prove to customers that they are committed to producing more sustainable solutions responsibly and with higher standards.

START PRACTICING MINDFUL CONSUMPTION:

Adopting a more sustainable lifestyle shouldn’t feel overwhelming.

Here are a few easy steps to get you started:

  1. Reduce, Reuse, and Repair.

  2. Make fewer impulsive purchases.

  3. Plan and research before purchasing.

  4. Avoid single use items.

  5. Consider purchasing used or borrow items.

  6. Keep track of what you currently own.

  7. Think about where the item came from and where it might end up.

  8. Decide if future purchases are needs or wants.

  9. Check the ingredients of the product prior to purchasing.

  10. Invest in better quality items to ensure longevity.
